Colorado Part III

Dear Freinds and Family,

The remainder of our trip with Sandy and Keith, our UK buddies, was spent in the Colorado Springs area.  We camped in Manitou Springs which is right under the famous Pike’s Peak. Our first day we tried to tour the US Olympic training center, but being Sunday, it was closed. The sculpture outside is still impressive. We of course waited for a gorgeous sunny day to climb up Pike’s Peak…in the jeep. It is a very steep and windy road up to the top which is 14,115 feet high. At the summit it was very cold but afforded great views. On our way down the steep slope in first gear, we were stopped to have our brake temperature taken.  Since we decended in gear, the man said we were doing very well and waved us on. Next famous tourist activity in the area is to visit the Garden of the Gods with the famous red rock shapes. There is a wonderful exhibt in the visitor’s center then the drives around the different sculptures with the “Balancing Rock” being most impressive. We visited the cute town of Manitou Springs with shops filled with all that a tourist would desire or want. Old Colorado, the first territorial capital, was also fun to visit with many restored old buildings. We now sit in our campsite in Denver East reflecting on our fabulous 5 week journey.  We have all shared such varied experiences but mostly we have shared wonderful friendship that will be surely missed as we drop our friends off at the airport tomorrow and begin our journey home. We have definitely not been disappointed by our travels in Colorado. Each time we have visited this spectacular state we are always awarded with beautiful scenery, animals, and friendly people. You must add this state to your future travel plans.

Until our next post, remember to be good to yourselves.

Cheers,

Susan and Jim
