Eastern Wyoming

This is a sample blog post

Greetings Friends and family,

The above photos are taken on Terry Bison ranch just north of the Colorado & Wyoming border. We began our morning with biscuits and gravy a new culinary dish for us all. The gravy poured over the buscuits had sausage in it and bacon fat. We discovered this dish was not one of our favorites. After our hearty breakfast, we watched Sandy and Keith mount up for a horse back ride over the plains. Keith’s horse decided to return to the corral and he ended up changing horses as his first one was not budging from the corral. On Terry Bison ranch, the owners have their own bison herd that they raise for commercial purchase. The tame bison of which there are about 30, could be visited up close, so we boarded the steam train on the property with our bag of bison food. Our narrated train ride took us out around the extensive acreage where we learned that movie “Dances with Wolves” was filmed right on the ranch.  The current owner now in his eighties builds trains for a hobby including the one we rode on. It was quite a slobbery experience feeding the bison as their tongues can be 18 inches long so you inevitably get slobbered on. We had never been so close to bison, close enough to pet their huge 35 pound heads. One huge bull bison weighed 2500 pounds! We finished our day with take out bison burgers and ribs from the famous Senator House restaurant on the property. Terry Bison ranch is a fun. .

Cheyenne, Wyoming was our next visit. It is the capital city of the state which only has a population of 600,000. Above is the old historic town with the restored train station. The Horse trolly is still in operation and around town, there are giant boots on display painted by local artists. We went in one of the local breweries to sample the beers and it was a different set up than we were used to.  You left a credit card at the front counter then helped yourself to the beers you wished to try. The train is Big Boy, one of 8 remaing huge  steam engines in the US. This engine pulled train cars from Cheyenne to Salt Lake City, not an easy task in the Rocky Mountains.

We planned to view the total eclipse in Ft. Laramie, WY. First we visited the fort which was an important stop on the Oregon trail. The time of totality for us was 2 min. 14 sec.It was an experience like no other. It was dusk and sunrise all within 2 minutes. The birds went to roost for the night and were totally confused as the moon began to uncover the sun. We were joined in our viewing by people from all over the USA and also Europe. Wonderful experience. Seven years from now watch for another chance in New Hampshire to experience this unique happening.

From Ft. Laramie, we visited Laramie, WY a cow town that has the only 4 year university in the state. We visited the restored Frontier Fort where Butch Cassidy was jailed fora short time. It was a unique place. Then on we went to the western part of WY. That will be another post. Hope you all enjoy your Labor Day weekend.

Remember to be good to yourselves.

Cheers,

Susan and Jim
